URCHIN — A RING THAT PERSONIFIES UNDULATING BEAUTY

(Los Angeles, CA) September 5, 2008 — Scattered stones dot this amorphous, sculptural cocktail ring, reminiscent of sea urchins. Pavéd prongs envelop the larger central stone like tiny tentacles. Shown with green amethyst and pink sapphires in rose gold, additional stone and metal options, including a madeira citrine set with chocolate diamonds, are available by special order.

This collection was inspired by a diving trip I took to the Andaman sea. There is an exquisite underwater nature preserve with an abundance of sea life," explains designer Ian Saudē. "I was struck not only by the stunning variety of plants and animals you find there, but also by the immense creative power of nature to manifest so many shapes and colors, textures and forms without ever repeating them — each one was unique. That infinite capacity for novelty and beauty is fascinating to me as a designer."

"For this piece in particular, I wanted to create something amorphous and alive, but still elegant and easy to wear. Like the interplay that you see between the animate and inanimate in an underwater world — like coral that is alive and yet fixed in time — I wanted this piece to capture that energy."

Ian Saudē began his design career on a trip to the Himalayas to study Buddhist philosophy, where he subsequently lived for more than a decade. Working closely with artisans and craftspeople throughout the Himalayas and elsewhere in Asia over many years, Ian brings a wealth of expertise and insight to creating products that showcase his unique aesthetic sensibility, subtly referencing both Eastern and Western artistic traditions in a way that is thoroughly contemporary.
